Concerns About Pole Dancing Pole

I didn't want to go to my first pole dance class.

Pole Dancing Wiping Down Pole

My best friend at the time had a friend who had a friend who was wanting to open a pole dance studio so she was teaching classes out of her house. My friend invited me to go and I said no.

She said she was going without me.

I went because that sounded like a recipe for her to get murdered and thought it would be less likely to happen if there were 2 of us. Obviously, I loved it because here I am almost 20 years later with a Pole Dance Studio of my own.

At the beginning of every Intro Pole Dance Class and Private Pole Dance Party, we go around the room and give every participant the opportunity to share whether they're nervous or excited and why. Our goal is to address any concerns at the very start in the hopes of allowing people to relax and fully enjoy the class. These are the top 3 concerns about pole dancing.

  1. I don't have enough upper body strength. While it is no secret that pole dance requires upper body strength, the reality is that in the beginning we are going to be working on skill appropriate moves. What that means is that the job of your arms in the beginning is to hold onto the pole. That's it. Your body will do the rest of the work to get you around the pole. As you continue classes you will need more upper body strength but it will be strength gained in our classes. You'll be surprised at how quickly that happens!

  2. I don't have any dance experience. No problem! I didn't either when I took my first pole dance class in 2007. That is something we teach as well. There's no counting and we focus on moving slow so you'll have plenty of space to learn and get better.

  3. I feel awkard or I'm not sexy. I totally understand that feeling! I felt the same way before my first class but please give yourself the opportunity to try! One of the awesome things about pole dance is that is automatically sexy and only gets sexier as you gain skill and experience.

Please know that, if you're feeling any of those feelings or even something else, we can talk about any of it - even if you read about it above. We want you feeling as comfortable as possible so you can have as much fun as possible.
